History

RUNRINGEN FOLK DANCE GROUP, VÄSTERÅS, SWEDEN

Runringen is a folk dance group which was started in 1993. In addition to dancing Swedish dances the members want to take up dances from Finland, Russia and the Baltic states.

The group is small, somewhere between 10 and 20. We come from several different countries. Our dance leader is Kari Kettunen who has comprehensive knowledge of dances from the east. We occasionally invite dance leaders from other groups, from Västerås, southern Sweden and Estonia, amongst others, to take up new dances for our repertoire.

The group has dance practice once a week during autumn, winter and spring, sometimes with live musicians, sometimes with cassette.

The groups has had exchanges with groups in other countries:

1993 visit by English Miscellany, England

1994 visit by Tori Folkdanslag, Estonia

1995 visited Baltic -95 gathering in Pärnu, Estonia (Tori Folkdanslag)

1996 visit by Kamushki group from Severodvisk, Archangelsk, Russia

1998 visited Archangelsk, Russia

Members of the group have participated in the Nordlek festival in Linköping, Sweden 1994 and Vasa, Finland 1997.

2004 participated in the Folk Dance Festival in Pernu, Estonia, in June.

The group has had performances with various events in Västerås; for example Musikdagarna (Music days), Kulturnatten (culture night), Midsommarfirande (Midsummer festivities). Several performances each year are given at servicehus (sheltered accommodation) or old folks homes. The repertoire includes several quick dances to lively music which is usually appreciated by the audience.
